Effect of different tinted ophthalmic lenses on color vision perception

Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate any changes in color perception with tinted lenses.

Methods: Fourteen participants with normal colour vision (mean age 25¡¾5.1 years; mean VA -0.07¡¾0.07 logMAR ) were tested three color vision tests while wearing different tinted lenses. Tinted colour were gray, brown, Green, yellow and each tinted lenses were prepared with two different transmittance (70% and 20%). Color vision was evaluated with the pseudo-isochromatic plates test(Hahn¡¯s color vision test), Arrangement test(Farnsworthe Panel D-15 test) and Lantern
test(Fletcher CAM Lantern test).

Results: In pseudo-isochromatic plates test and Farnsworth Panel D-15, error scores were higher with tinted lenses. Wearing dark tinted lenses than light tinted lenses made higher error score, in particular dark yellow tinted lenses showed significantly higher errors than other colours. In Lantern test, error scores were significantly higher with dark gray(p=.001) and dark brown(p=.000) than other colors, and error scores with dark tinted lenses showed higher error scores(p=.000).

Conclusion: Tinted lens es regardless of types of colours showed higher error scores on colour vision perception for all three colour vision tests. In particular, yellow tinted lenses which is commonly used for nighttime driving and shooting may produce colour vision confusion. Also dark gray and brown tinted lenses which are commonly used for sunglasses also produced colour perception confusion. Therefore tinted colour lenses needs to be prescribed with caution for such
case.
